who is the class mvp?
For today's assignment, we'll use a spreadsheet to help us keep track of a contest. In our example, a class is having a competition to see who can get the most points by the end of the quarter. They have set up a scoring system to keep track of everyone's points. The student that has the most points at the end of the quarter wins a fabulous ca$h prize!
Here is their scoring system:
This can get messy. Let's set up a spreadsheet to do all of the hard work for us. Here are the steps.
1. Open Excel and a blank spreadsheet. Go to FILE...PAGE SETUP....LANDSCAPE
2. Under A1, label it "Student Name"
3. Under B1, label it "# of A's"
4. Under C1, label it "Points"
5. Under D1, label it "# of B's"
6. Under E1, label it "Points"
7. Under F1, label it "# of C's"
8. Under G1, label it "Points"
9. Under H1, label it "# of D's"
10. Under I1, label it 'Points'
11. Under J1, label it "# of F's"
12. Under K1, label it 'Points'
13. Under L1, label it "Character Cards"
14. Under M1, label it 'Points'
15. Under N1, label it "TOTAL PTS"
16. Fill in the student names, starting with A2 and going down: Alphonso, Bryan, Christi, Danny, Ethan, Francis, Geraldine, Harold, Isabella, Jordyn, Keith, Leah, Madeline, Nate, Othello (you should stop on A16).
17. Enter the formulas--
20. Double check to make sure that you have the students ranked now in order from most points to least. Looks like it was a very close contest! Under File....Page Setup....Click "SHOW GRIDLINES." Then put your name at the bottom somewhere (or as a footer), and print preview & print.
Here is their scoring system:
- You get 5 points for every "A" paper
- You get 4 points for every "B" paper
- You get 3 points for every "C" paper
- You get 1 point for every "D" paper
- You lose 2 points for every "F" paper
- You get 6 bonus points for every character card

17. Enter the formulas--
- In C2, type this: =B2*5 ......then hit enter. You should get a 0 in that spot. If so, go to the right corner of this cell and stretch the formula all the way down to row 16.
- In E2, type this: =D2*4 ....then hit enter. If you get a 0, do the same thing as before.
- In G2, type this; =F2*3 ....then hit enter. Stretch it down if it worked.
- In I2, type this: =H2*1 .......then enter. Stretch it.
- In K2, type this: =J2*(-2) ....then enter. Stretch it.
- In M2, type this: =L2*6 ...Enter. Stretch.
- In N2, we want it to add up all of our point values. Here's what you type in N2: =SUM(C2+E2+G2+I2+K2+M2) Enter. Stretch it down.
- # of A's (starting with Alphonso and going down): 4,3,5,1,3,6,3,2,4,1,3,3,4,2,4
- # of B's (same way): 2,3,2,5,3,2,1,3,2,3,4,3,4,2,1
- # of C's: 3,3,3,2,2,2,5,5,3,5,2,1,2,4,5
- # of D's: 1,1,1,2,3,1,1,1,1,2,2,1,1,2,1
- # of F's: 1,1,0,1,0,0,1,0,1,0,0,3,0,1,0
- # of Character Cards: 1,3,2,1,1,2,1,3,1,4,1,2,2,1,2
